Course Introduction

This course features invited guest Professor Akira Takano from The University of Tokyo to explore suicide prevention strategies within university settings:

  • Education-Oriented Counseling: Student counseling and suicide prevention focused on educational frameworks.

  • Core Responses: Daily support, handling high-risk students, crisis intervention, and postvention.

  • Institutional Setup: Key considerations for establishing and managing student counseling centers.

Curriculum Outline

The program is divided into Foundations & Understanding (Morning) and Practice & Application (Afternoon):

  • Lesson 1: Current status and risk factors of university student suicide.

  • Lesson 2: Fundamental perspectives on suicide prevention and the Three-Tier Support (Counseling) Model.

    • Case Study 1: "Mindfulness, Strengthening Ties, and Linking" – Simulated group discussions.

  • Lesson 3: Crisis response and post-crisis management: Principles of crisis intervention and postvention (care for bereaved families, preventing suicide contagion/clusters).

    • Case Study 2: Crisis response simulation.

  • Review: Examining response measures across various colleges and universities.
